This is all really nice in Japan unless you're fat, have tattoos/piercings, or have short hair as a woman. Don't romanticize Japan too much to the point you can't also criticize it. (The same applies for all countries!)

Can someone know why most of them reverse park? It's some unwritten rule? It could be for safety, once you get out, it's easier and safer with the hood pointing outward.
Chimera

That survey, "where are you from?" The Japanese read top to bottom / right to left, so vertical lines, US is second best, still far behind, wobbly left to right lines. I ordered a tool from Japan, there was a supply problem, received multiple emails explaining the delay in detail, and a hand written of apology with the tool. Reverse parking is (was?) illegal in Florida.

In Japan, many elderly people commit a crime so that they are sent to prison. They do that because they simply don't have enough money when they retire. I prison, they have shelter and food.... talk about a wonderful country. Shall I talk about the conditions of Gueishas??

Believe me. If you're an orderly person, japan will be a great environment for you. I feel like everyone see me as a weird person for putting trash in a trash bin and storing my own trash inside my bag when there's no trash bin nearby. And people will talk behind my back because I'm being strict about environment neatness and order. Indonesia is a hell hole for me. If anything close to japan in this country, it's Yogyakarta.

I love almost everything Japan has to offer BUT... The PEER pressure is insane, family life is hard and scarce with very long working hours and the fact that you HAVE to go out an drink every so often with your work colleagues after long working hours in order to be accepted would give me a lot of stress as I don’t drink alchohol and I don’t like being in crowds... Also 5 days of holiday per year... Now let me continue trimming my Bonsai...
Gilles van Zeebroeck
Gilles van Zeebroeck 9 ימים לפני
@Testtest Mann Thanks for getting back to me! Good to see that it has become “normalised” as I remember a friend of mine who lived in Yokohama for almost a decade told me that only in weekends are they able to spend time as a family. People having a free choice is the best recipe I think...
Testtest Mann
Testtest Mann 9 ימים לפני
@Gilles van Zeebroeck, I cannot say anything about you, your life, and your culture. I just tell that it is not so hard as you think. Compared to the past, work hours drastically become shorter. There are many who don't like and many who like, different by gender, by age, or by position. It may seem hard, but it is sometimes pleasant. I think advanced countries other than Japan are good countries where people do not necessarily work hard. Japan is where people need to work, though, compare to the past, Japanese people tend not to work.
Gilles van Zeebroeck
Gilles van Zeebroeck 10 ימים לפני
@Testtest Mann Good to know and thanks for this insight, I was under the impression that these outings however not mandatory are still preferably! I’m 45 now I have 2 children and I am quite knackered after a full days of work. Our daycare stops at 5 PM and one of us needs to pick up the kids and do home keeping. We make fresh food every day, try to exercise a bit and practice some hobbies, I don’t see how I would want to replace that with spending more time with people that I already spent the whole day with... I don’t think it’s normal that people see their colleagues more than their spouses or children... I feel that if you don’t do these outings with colleagues that you will not be accepted equally as people who do. I like the idea of having a community at work but do people still keep contact after leaving the company? I very much enjoyed playing with my friends all night but this was not on school nights as it would hamper my attention span the following day... Can you shed a light if many women are involved in these after working hours? Is it a man dominated activity?
Testtest Mann
Testtest Mann 10 ימים לפני
Foreigners often criticize long working hours and drinking with colleagues, but it is not so serious, because it is very normal to them and it is a pleasure. A company is not just a work around but it is close to a community. Don't you enjoy playing around with friends all night when young? Of course, there are exceptions and some are too extreme. And Japan is not a rich country, where they have to work. Anyway, Bonsai is a good hobby. Thanks.

People talking about suicide rates in Japan, as if 'mitigating' such politeness... But suicide rates in Japan are not far from USA rates. And they are not the highest in the world either, today we know that suicide is far more common (and deathly) in poor populations so African countries have far higher rates. The Eastern Europe has some high rates too, middle east countries are not far behind. Another misconception is that doctors and professors are some of the people who commit more self exterminating attempts, when actually the rates of suicide are much more superior amongst miners and fisherman for example. Just a brief and superficial explanation, since I read a lot of uninformed comments. Japan has a taboo with mental health, but it is not something much bigger that what other countries experience (for example South Korea).

The reverse parking is actually not exclusive to japan, it is a matter of on one hand psychology, if while you park you are thinking of going to the place you parked at, or driving away from it, and on the other hand it is a matter of training, as military drivers, emergency responders, and anybody else who needs to be able to drive off at a moments notice often train to park so that they are able to drive straight out. This is the primary reason that in Israel, with their high percentage of people that have been through military training, many if not most cars park reversed, while my father anecdotally has noticed that the people that like to go to work at his place tend to park nose first, while people that are less than enthusiastic about work tend to park reversed too. In short, people that park reversed typically already prepare for leaving while they arrive.

If this really is the mindset of the Japanese, and this was the behaviour and culture before 1940s. It was not brought to Japan by the occupying foreign Americans. So why did Japanese commit such terrible atrocities in WW2 and before that in Korea and China?? Sometimes you must learn to see the forest from the trees.

There is a difference between how the Japanese treat you (as a foreign visitor) on the surface (all the politeness you see here) and what they think about you but won't say out loud. It is a high degree of outward social grace and manners, but it is not love from the heart. You will never become a truly accepted member of the society.

The reverse parking thing is really interesting. I’ve seen work sites that require everyone to reverse park in case of an evacuation, but the fact that Japan has reverse parking as the norm is quite amazing. I honestly wish more people would reverse park, as it would likely reduce accidents from people backing out.
Testtest Mann
Testtest Mann 10 ימים לפני
In fact, parking lots are not spacious. Drivers cannot head-in the area. So drivers must park the car reversely. If you don't need reverse parking, it means the parking is spacious.

I can only assume the people who disliked this video have never been to Japan. I have never felt so welcome, so safe, so accommodated, hygienic, and so in awe of technology as I have when in Japan.
